Waiting for your IRS tax refund can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Fortunately, tracking its status doesn’t have to be a daunting task. If you’ve filed your return electronically, you can typically check its status within as little as 24 hours after submission. However, if you filed a paper return, it may take approximately four weeks for the status of your tax return to be reflected in the IRS’s system.
Step 1:
Go to the official IRS website
Step 2:
Then, access the “Where’s My Refund?” Tool On the IRS homepage, locate the “Tools” tab in the top menu bar. Click on it, and a dropdown menu will appear. From the options provided, select “Where’s My Refund?”
Step 3:
Enter Required Information You’ll be directed to the “Where’s My Refund?” page. Here, input the following details accurately:
- Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
- Filing status
- Exact refund amount as shown on your tax return
Step 4:
Once you’ve entered all the required information, click on the “Submit” button to begin the search process. The system will process your request and display your refund status momentarily.
Step 5:
Upon completion of the search, the system will provide one of the following status updates:
- Return Received: This status indicates that the IRS has received your tax return and is currently processing it.
- Refund Approved: Your refund has been approved, and the IRS has initiated the process of sending the funds. Depending on your chosen refund method (direct deposit or mail), the status will specify the action taken.
- Refund Sent: This status signifies that the IRS has successfully sent your refund. If you opted for direct deposit, it will indicate the date the deposit was made. If you chose to receive a paper check, the tool will provide an estimated delivery date.
